SHILLONG, June 8 The Meghalaya Government-constituted five-member committee, to recommend ways to include Khasi in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, would submit its report to the Government next week.

Committee member Sylvanus Lamare confirmed here on Saturday that the report has been finalised. We would be sending the report to the State Government next week, he said.

The other members of the committee include MBoSE Executive Chairman, EP Kharbhih, S Quotient Sumer, former member of the Sahitya Akademi and Art and Culture Director Matsiewdor War as convener of the committee.

The State Government would then study the recommendations and ask the Centre to include Khasi in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

The State Government in 2005 had notified Khasi and Garo as Associate Official Languages of the State for impressing on the Union Government to get the Khasi language included in the Eighth Schedule.

Lamare, who is the Principal of St Edmunds College and a member of Sahitya Akademi, is of the view that a mass movement would help inclusion of Khasi in the 8th Schedule.

He said that by getting included in the 8th schedule, the Khasi would get enriched as the language would be included in the syllabus of different Universities. Moreover, it would also help in employment generation.
