GUWAHATI, Oct 2 - The Assam government has constructed around 26 lakh toilets in the past two years as a commitment to �swachhata�, said Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while speaking at the Gandhi Jayanti programme held at Gandhi Mandap here today.
Sonowal stated that the government is working towards declaring Assam an open defecation-free State and in this mission, he sought cooperation from all sections of the people.
He also informed that the government is contemplating to construct 'signature structure or postcard structure' in each hill of the city to enable the administration as well as the city dwellers to preserve the sanctity of hill areas and discourage encroachment.
Moreover, the National Health Mission (NHM) in association with Rotary Club today organised an awareness rally on the occasion of Swachhta Hi Sewa campaign from the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) to Cotton College.
�As part of the programme, a cleanliness drive was also held on the MMCH premises along with tree plantation. Many nursing students and health workers participated in the rally to promote cleanliness. In the programme, JNV Subramanium, Mission Director, NHM; AC Baishya, Executive Director, NHM; Madhab Rajbangshi, MMCH Superintendent and Madhuchanda Bhattacharyya, president, Rotary Club, Guwahati also took part,� a statement said.
The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) today called for a cleanliness drive and to create awareness among the people living near Gauhati Medical College and Hospital regarding hygiene and cleanliness.
Again, the Border Security Force (BSF), Guwahati Frontier, concluded the 15-day long �Swachh Bharat Abhiyan � Swachhata Hi Seva� today at Patgaon here as well as at all sector headquarters and battalions under command.
�We the sentinels of the border are not only confined to our assigned duties, but are also donning the garb of the 'sentinels of the environment'. The aim of the campaign is to create awareness among civil population and various other stakeholders,� said a statement.
