GNLA militant killed in encounter

TURA, Feb 9 � Police shot dead a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant in Megra village, 25-30 kms from East Garo Hills district headquarters Williamnagar, this morning.

Based on intelligence reports, SWAT commandos of the Meghalaya Police and CoBRA unit of CRPF launched an operation in Megra village area under Songsak Police Station. They were fired upon by militants from a hideout high on a hill leading to a brief firefight in which security forces killed the yet unidentified person even as five other insurgents managed to escape.

Police commandos later searched the area for another militant who was hit on the leg but had escaped with other members of the outfit. They recovered a pistol and a hand grenade from the hideout.
