SHILLONG, Oct 2 - As part of Gandhi Jayanti and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Governor Tathagata Roy today attended an awareness and cleanliness drive programme at Polo here today.
Various programmes were also held to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti by organising cleanliness drives and paying homage to the Father of the Nation in the State capital.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said hygiene is the key to good health and well being. He also stressed on the importance of keeping homes, public places, localities and surroundings clean.
In order to ensure cleanliness, the Governor said it is important to generate awareness to motivate communities to adopt sustainable cleanliness practices every day.
The programme was also attended by Minister for Health and Family Welfare, AL Hek, Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills, PS Dkhar, president, GORETO Socio-Cultural and Welfare Society, Shillong, PN Sharma, Commandant of CRPF, 67 BN, CRPF personnel among others.
Later, the Governor and other dignitaries along with the people took part in the cleanliness drive in Polo Market and its adjoining areas.

Aizawl: Mizoram today observed the 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi mainly with cleanliness drive. The people in various parts of the State cleaned their respective areas in the morning.
Government employees, students, teachers and local people cleaned roads, streets and drains during the cleanliness week.
State dignitaries led by Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan paid tributes to the Father of the Nation by laying wreaths at the Gandhi�s statue at Zodin Square.
Ministers, Legislators, Chief Secretary Arvind Ray and senior officials also paid floral tribute to Gandhi.
Swachhata Hi Seva concludes: As part of the Prime Minister�s �Swachhata Hi Seva � 2018� campaign, Project Pushpak in association with ICFAI University undertook cleanliness drive in different locations of Aizawl from September 15 which concluded today. On the culminating day, a cleanliness drive was organised along the NH-54 at Thuampui. Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan also participated in the campaign while a special function was organised at Rajat Auditorium to commemorate the event.
Rajasekharan said that Indians got freedom under Gandhiji but his dream of a clean India remained unfulfilled till date. He said India being a developing country is plagued with various social issues and that stressed cleanliness drive was the best start of eliminating social issues from the society and promoting growth of the country. He said that all citizens of the country need to participate in this cause with a spirit of nationalism and the success of cleanliness mission will bring a big change in India. The Governor also said that cleanliness has been a way of life for the people of Mizoram and the State can become model for other States to emulate.
Meanwhile, Lt Gen (Dr) A K Misra (retd), Vice Chancellor of ICFAI University, Mizoram expressed his contentment of the collaboration between ICFAI University and Project Pushpak, which he said was a good exposure for the students to work with the armed forces.
Itanagar: Joining the rest of the country, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Dr) B D Mishra (retd) and Chief Minister Pema Khandu today paid tributes to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 149th birth anniversary.
Leading from the front, the Chief Minister along with his ministerial colleagues and other leaders took part in a cleanliness drive at Mahatma Gandhi Park, Niti Vihar here commemorating the birth anniversary of Bapuji. It also marked the culmination of fortnight-long �Swachhata Hi Seva� campaign.
Khandu, who earlier paid floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, called upon the capital dwellers to keep Itanagar clean and green. He said the motto of keeping Itanagar clean and green should be followed with full sincerity and dedication.
The Chief Minister also paid tributes to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary. Later, the Chief Minister flagged off 11 newly-procured trucks to add to the strength of garbage collection fleet of vehicles of the Itanagar Municipal Council (IMC).
At Raj Bhavan here, a �Sarva Dharma Prarthana Sabha� was organised on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The Governor along with his wife Neelam Misra and others paid floral tributes to the Father of the Nation. The religious leaders offered prayers for world peace and amity.
Recalling the Mahatma�s ideals of Satyagrah and Ahimsa, the Governor exhorted the people of the state to imbibe the Gandhian thoughts and way of life. He said that incorporating truthfulness, brotherhood, cleanliness, transparency, accountability and honesty in our approach to life, administration and projects, will be the greatest tribute to Gandhi Ji on his birth anniversary celebration.
To commemorate the day, Neelam Misra released a documentary on traditional weaving titled �Bhunai Ke Rangin-Loin Loom Weaving�.
