DIBRUGARH, Oct 2 - The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi was remembered on his 150th birth anniversary at Rajiv Bhawan here today. The programme was organised by the Dibrugarh District Congress Committee (DDCC).
Tribute was paid with lighting of lamp and floral offerings at the portrait of the Mahatma at Thana Chariali and Marwaripatty. Similar homage-paying programmes were also organised at the office of the Congress office, where DDCC president Atuwa Munda offered flowers and lit a traditional lamp.
A similar programme was also organised at the Moran branch of the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha. Paying of floral tributes were led by its branch secretary Lakheswar Tanti.
SIVASAGAR: Paying respects to Bapuji on his 150th birth anniversary, almost all institutions, organisations, the Sivasagar Municipality Board and the panchayats here undertook cleanliness drives in and around their respective institutions and the town today in response to the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The Sivasagar Municipality Board in association with the district administration took out a massive procession in the town to make the people aware that cleanliness is true service (swaachata hi sewa). The procession was flagged of by Pallav Gopal Jha, DC, Sivasagar.
An all-religion prayer meeting was also convened near the Gandhi statue in front of the Mahkuma Parishad Office. The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Sivasagar, also joined the procession with its team of students and officials. Aakya, a leading socio-cultural oganisation carried out a cleanliness drive at Lachit Park in Muktinath Chariali and cleaned Dr Bhupen Hazarika�s statue at the Temple road. Gaon sabhas were organised at every GP today to discuss threadbare the problems of the respective Gaon Panchayats and to adopt resolutions for new schemes and plans for the next financial year.
Mangaldai: Tributes were paid to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi at Mangaldai on his birth anniversary on Wednesday.
In this connection, a day-long programme was organised by the Darrang district administration at Gandhi Smriti Park, located at Sankar Nagar Mangaldai.
A large number of people including senior citizens, women, youths, students in addition to government officials and staff took part in the programme. This was followed by the closing function of the celebration of the 17-day-long prorgramme called, Swachhta Hi Seva� . Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner, Darrang Ashok Kr Barman announced rural Darrang as an Open Defecation Free (ODF) district. Darrang has achieved the target of construction of 1,37,768 household latrines across 553 villages under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin). The Deputy Commissioner in the presence of ADCs Narnarayan Nath and Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati, freedom fighter Madhab Ch Barua, Principal of Kharupetia College Dr Budhin Ch Hazarika and other distinguished guests offered cash prizes of Rs 25,000 each to Bar Thekerabari and Bocha chuba as joint winners of the cleanest village award for the year 2018 while Haldha, the winner of last year�s cleanest village which has brought about a revolution in cleanliness, drawing appreciation even from the Prime Minister, was awarded specially with a cash prize of Rs one lakh as per the announcement of the State PHE Minister a few days back. Cash prizes to the winners of the school-level art and essay writing contest on Swachhata were also handed over in the function.
UDALGURI: �Any action taken under non-violence always yields a positive result and the actions taken as a consequence of violent thoughts always ends in disaster and it�s victory is always temporary.� This was observed by Promod Boro, president of the All Bodo Students� Union (ABSU) here at Udalguri railway station where the ABSU organised a mass meeting today to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi�s 17 minute halt at the Udalguri railway station on April 12 in 1934 on his way to Tezpur to take part in the Harijan Sevak Sangha programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Munindra Sarmah, a social worker and a voracious reader of Gandhian philosophy appealed to the Railway department to erect a statue of Gandhiji declaring Udalguri railway station as a heritage site and take initiative to make Udalguri station a stoppage for all trains as Udalguri town is the district headquarter.
The meeting held on the grand occasion of Gandhi Jayanti was organised by the students� organisation where Lok Sabha MP Ramen Deka, Soumyadeep Dutta of Nature�s Beckon, Ravila Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Rajveer Singh, SP of Udalguri district, Tarapati Upadhyaya, Nabinmalla Boro and Pushpadhar Sarmah, Sahitya Akademi awardees of the region, Dhiren Boro, president of NDFB (Progressive) among many others participated.
In yet another programme, the Udalguri Town Committee also organised Gandhi Jayanti at the Gandhi Maidan where it felicitated ten senior citizens with gamosa, arnai and a sarai each.
DIPHU: People of the two hill districts of East and West Karbi Anglong observed the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today. The day also coincided with the winding up of �Swachhata Hi Seva� campaign.
In Diphu, the district headquarter town of Karbi Anglong, various programmes were organised jointly by the City Mission Management Unit (CMMU) of the Assam State Urban Livelihood Mission Society and Diphu Town Committee. The celebration witnessed large participation of women SHGs members in the procession taken out from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Park, Bus Stand and passed through busy thoroughfares of Diphu market in order to spread the message and awareness of cleanliness.
A procession was also carried out at Diphu. Executive Member (EM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Town & Country Planning and Handloom & Textiles, Department, Ratan Teron, while flagging off the procession said it is every person�s duty to keep their own locality, homes and town clean.
In the procession Principal Secretary, KAAC Mahadananda Hazarika; KAAC, Secretary in-charge Town Committee Affairs Michael Timung; Additional Deputy Commissioner Norsing Bey; Town & Country Planning, Deputy Director and CMMU, Project Officer Reuben Ronghang CMMU; Executive Engineer incharge, PHE, Diphu Rural Water Supply Division, PHE, Bimal Chandra Sarma and Executive Engineer, Diphu Urban Water Supply Division, PHE, Bikram Teron were present.
Later, a meeting was held at Diphu Club where the Diphu Town Committee declared Diphu town as Open Defecation Free (ODF) town.
Biswanath Chariali: Gandhi Jayanti was also celebrated at Biswanath Chariali. A programme was organised by the Biswanath district administration at the Cheniram Das Memorial Park.
The programme was inaugurated by Biswanath DC Dhiraj Jyoti Kalita by lighting an earthen lamp. The programme was attended by ADC Parijat Bhuyan, Executive Engineer of PHE, Rabin Das, SDIPRO, Biswanath Prashanta Kumar Borah and others. It was followed by a cleanliness drive at the Madhupur daily market.
The Department of Public Health and Engineering (PHE) held the closing ceremony of �Swaichhata Hi Seva� programme at Chariali HS and MP School. The Biswanath Municipality Board organised a drawing competition among schoolchildren and carried out a cleanliness drive on the occasion. The Biswanath District Congress Committee also observed the day with a day long programme at Bina Pani Natya Mandir here. Several programmes were organised in different parts of the district including Chatiya, Borgang, Halem, Gohpur and Kalabari in which tributes were paid to the Father of the Nation.
DERGAON: Three senior harijans namely Liyas Mosi, Sukhilal Basfore and Golap Chandra Basfore were felicitated for their untiring contributions to the Swachh Bharat mission by the Golaghat district administration at Golaghat in the Gandhi Jayanti programme today. Gandhi Jayanti was observed under the joint collaboration of the Golaghat district administration and the District Water and Sanitation Committee at the Golaghat district library today. The day-long programme organised also to mark the end of �Swachhata Hi Seva� programme and the commencement of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was chaired by DC Golaghat Gaurav Bothra.
