TURA, March 6 - The foundation stone of a multi-crore-rupee tribal research institute was laid at Chidekgre near Babadam by Thomas A Sangma, North Tura MLA and adviser to the Chief Minister, on Tuesday.

He stated that the project was first conceived by late PA Sangma with a view to opening opportunities and motivating the young Garo people towards their culture, traditions and usages which were fast eroding in the face of onslaught of western culture and influence.

The basic structure for the institute was built in 2017 with a fund of about Rs 4.4 crore allocated by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council. Recently, the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sanctioned an additional Rs 41 crore for the project.
