JORHAT, Oct 25 - A forest guard of Jorhat Range was killed last night due to accidental firing from his gun while chasing a wild herd of elephants at Bezorsiga -a remote area on the Jhanjimukh outskirts here - under Nimati Beat of the Forest department.

The guard has been identified as Hemanta Tamuly (52).

Jorhat DFO Davinder Suman has ordered a probe into the incident to be conducted by the Assistant Conservator of Forest (Jorhat). An FIR has also been filed by the Forest department at the Teok Police station regarding the incident.

Suman told this correspondent that preliminary reports indicate that the shotgun that Tamuly was using reportedly had reversed the cartridge which hit him on the stomach as he was trying to scare away the herd of elephants by firing in the air.
