GUWAHATI, Nov 12 - Nearly 73.5 per cent of the Diwali related injuries are caused by bursting of flowerpot crackers and stopping this firecracker may help in reducing more than 70 per cent of burn injuries during the festival of Diwali, revealed a data analysis conducted by the Burn Care Foundation of the city-based NEMCARE Hospitals.
In its bid to create awareness about the burn-related injuries, prevention and precautionary measures ahead of Diwali, the Burn Care Foundation holds programmes every year in schools and colleges on the issue.
Flowerpots, locally known as Kalgash, are mainly illuminating firework and are not meant for bursting. However, it is seen that this firecracker bursts quite often causing serious injury to the persons. If people stop using this, 75 per cent of the Diwali related burn injuries could be reduced, said Dr BP Sarma, secretary of the Burn Care Foundation, presenting the data analysis in a press meet here today.
The 10-bed burn care unit of NEMCARE under the banner of Burn Care Foundation looks after the management, rehabilitation, research and prevention of burn injuries. The centre receives a large number of burn injury patients during the Diwali time.
