GUWAHATI, June 24 - The flood situation in the State worsened today with five upper Assam districts bearing the brunt of the second wave that has claimed one more life in Sivasagar. With this a total of 14 persons have died in the flood this year, including three in the second wave. Significantly, all three fatalities in the second wave of flood have been reported from Sivasagar district.
In the past 24 hours, the flood has affected a huge population and more than 5,000 hectares of crop lands in the districts of Dhemaji, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar and Dibrugarh, the daily report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority stated.
A good number of affected people are taking shelter in 27 relief camps spread across the districts.
The flood report further said that the Brahmaputra river has been flowing above the danger level in Jorhat and Dhubri districts. Its tributaries Dikhow and Disang in Sivasagar district, Dhansiri in Golaghat district and Jia Bharali in Sonitpur district are also flowing above the danger level.
Moreover, flood-triggered incidents of erosion have also been reported from Golaghat district.
