Flood scene worsens in Lakhimpur

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, June 10 � Flood situation in Lakhimpur district worsened further as five school going girls escaped miraculously when the bamboo bridge they were crossing was swept away by the speedy currents of Ranganadi river in Kharkati in North Lakhimpur on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred at Phatasuti Ghaat of Kharkati under Telahi mouza of North Lakhimpur revenue circle when five girl students of ADK HS School were crossing the bamboo bridge over a stream of Ranganadi. The bridge was the only means of communication for 40 villages of West Telahi GP under Nowboicha LAC with North Lakhimpur.

Meanwhile, the district Water Resources Department in North Lakhimpur said that the Brahmaputra and its tributaries Dikrong, Pabha and Kakoi were flowing above the danger level. The flood waters of Gabhoru river has affected 50 families in Laluk, who have been forced to erect raised bamboo platforms to take shelter from inundation.

The worst-affected areas are Bokanadi, Habir Doloni, No. 2 Sonapur, Pukuria, Boloma and Garmur which fall under Nowboicha revenue circle. In Dhalpur under Narayanpur revenue circle, overflowing waters of Durpang, Pichala and Dihiri rivers have flooded a wide area comprising the villages of Ganak Doloni, Baghargaon, No. 2 Rooptoli, Phutabhog, Rangajaan, Bhatmow, Major Doloni, Geleki, Dibruwal, Pichalaguri, Saru Kathoni and Khalihamari.

In Dhunaguri under Bihpuria revenue circle, massive erosion by Subansiri river has damaged the Dhunaguri-Bhalukaguri PWD road at several places. The flood water of Dikrong river has submerged villages like Kumoliya Chapori, Chenimora, Kolabari, Banga Muslim, Banga Siriyani, Banga Bishnu etc., in Bihpuria and Dongibeel. Floods in Lakhimpur district have taken one life so far, as the body of one Rajkumar Biswas (32), who was swept away by the flood water of Gabharu river on Sunday evening was recovered by an NDRF team later on.
