GUWAHATI, Dec 28 - Fire broke out at the neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) this evening leading to commotion among patients and their attendants.

There were around 20-odd babies in the NICU when the incident took place, although official version is still awaited.

Although no one was injured, the incident has once again raised questions over the level of fire preparedness in government setups, including medical colleges.

The fire, which apparently was the result of an electric short circuit, broke out on the third floor of the building.

An official of the State Fire and Emergency Service said that the fire was brought under control before it could spread further.

Fire fighters were rushed to the spot immediately after getting the information and the babies were shifted to safety with the help of hospital authorities. It took us nearly an hour to douse the fire, the official said.

Dr Ramen Talukdar, Superintendent, GMCH, when contacted, said that the situation was under control adding that details would be shared later.
