Farmers� meet at Buralikson Sugarcane Station

DERGAON, Dec 7 - �No nation can develop without the growth of agriculture. Though science has developed rapidly, but without agriculture no one can survive. So we must bring agriculture to our live activities.� This was stated by Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia, while delivering his address as the chief guest at the inaugural session of the farmers� meet held at Buralikson Sugarcane Research Station (BSRS) near Dergaon recently.

The MLA also urged the farmers not to feel shy to introduce themselves as farmers even they should try to engage their children at agriculture process from their childhood. He also revealed that the Government is considering to revive the Baruabamungaon Sugar Mill.

The meet inaugurated by retired principal of Missamara HS School Hem Saikia. The retired director of Research of Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Dr Girindra Nath Hazarika, while delivering his speech, said that the Agriculture Department and the scientists must do hard work to help the farmers to go ahead with agriculture as a means of livelihood.

The Director of Extension research of AAU, Dr Dipak Bora, highlighted the different activities of research centres of the AAU and about the necessity of soil test for better agricultural production.

The inaugural session was attended by the Director of Post Graduate Education of AAU, Dr Chandan Hazarika, and member of AAU Management Committee Dr Samir Bordoloi, among others. Chief scientist of the BSRS, Dr Bijnan Bordoloi, while delivering his welcome address, highlighted the different aspects of the BSRS laying stress on sugarcane research and production of high quality molasses by the station.

The inaugural session was started with the presentation of a Borgeet by Krishnakshi Dutta. Noted farmers Biren Bora, Doreswar Bora and Jatin Phukan (Missamari) and Ashok Dutta (Dhekial) were also felicitated, while eight other labourers of the station � Bipin Kakoti, Bipin Bora, Biren Saikia, Rabin Konwar, Lalit barua, Jugal bora, Sarubhai Das and Gangaram Chotal � were awarded prizes.

The meeting was moderated by employee of the BSRS, Prakash Dutta, and a research-based book on sugarcane cultivation, written by Dr Bijnan Ch Bordoloi, Dr Dhimandev Sinha, Dr Girindra Nath Hazarika and Mahima Begum, was also released by MLA Mrinal Saikia.

Later, the agriculture exhibition was inaugurated by the MLA. In the afternoon, a face-to-face interaction between the agriculture scientists and farmers was held where a large number of farmers took part.
