Ex-militant escapes murder attempt

DIPHU, Oct 6 - Pranab Nonisa, former commander-in-chief of now disbanded Dimasa militant outfit Dima Halam Daogah (DHD), had a miraculous escaped this afternoon when a bullet fired at him from inside a dense forest near Diphu failed to hit him.

Nonisa was taken to Diphu Civil Hospital where he was declared out of danger by attending physicians.

Police said Nonisa was travelling from his native village Dhansiri, 22 km from Diphu, in a motorbike.

When he reached Naharbari, a dense forest area around 6 km from Diphu town, a shot was fired at him. However, the bullet hit the petrol tank of the bike and the slug deflected and grazed his abdomen and lower ribs. The impact threw Nonisa off the bike and he fell on the road. There were injuries to his face and head, but passers-by saw him and took him to hospital.

Till filing of this report, no one has been arrested.

Nonisa was the founder member and led the militant wing of DHD since 1994. He was with the organisation till 2011 when the outfit came overground and was later disbanded.
