GUWAHATI, Nov 18 - An English translated version of the iconic Assamese children�s short story book Buri Air Sadhu by the doyen of Assamese literature Lakshminath Bezbaroa was formally launched on Saturday.
The book had been translated by Nripen Dutta Baruah who had passed away on November 8 this year.
Dutta Baruah�s version of the acclaimed book is titled Old Mother�s Wise Tales which was released in his residence in Ambari on the occasion of his �Adya Shraddha� today.
The original Burhi Aair Sadhu, first published in 1911, is a collection of stories and folklore and has a place as one of the most popular, enduring and profound texts in Assamese literature.
Nripen Dutta Baruah was a graduate and postgraduate in History from St Stephen�s College, Delhi University. His educational pursuit began in Nirmalaya Vidyalaya, Guwahati, and later did his high schooling at St Edmund�s College (School Division), Shillong. His first book is a biography titled Ancient Wing, a musical voyage with a blue bird and red river Brahmaputra � Dr Bhupen Hazarika�. The second endeavour was the translation of Burhi Aair Sadhu. The third book is yet to be published and is a non-fictional work and had been titled A letter to Sunshine (Earth in a Nutshell) and is about a little boy from a remote town who seeks knowledge about the world he lives in.
Nripen Dutta Baruah joined as a partner in Lawyer�s Book Stall, a premier publishing house of Assam until 1983 when combination of fate and passion compelled him to seek a newer pasture in Homeopathy.
