Eid celebrated with fervour in Assam, Meghalaya

Guwahati, Aug 31 (IANS): Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated across Assam today with religious fervour and traditional pomp and gaiety. The festival marked the end of the holy month of Ramzan with Muslims offering prayers at community fields.

Sweets were exchanged as both Muslims and Hindus greeted each other after the Eid prayers. Special prayers were held for peace and harmony at various community fields.

Eid celebrated in Meghalaya:Eid-ul-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramazan, was celebrated today with religious fervour and gaiety across Meghalaya, predominantly a Christian State.

Thousands of men and children clad in new attire and wearing skull caps offered Namaz-e-Eid in Eidgahs or open grounds and mosques in Shillong, Dawki, Nongpoh, Ladrymbai, Byrnihat and Garo Hills region. The biggest congregation here was held at Laban Eidgah, where over 7,000 devouts offered prayers. Moulana Imran Jyrwa led the prayers.

Meghalaya Governor RS Mooshahary and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma greeted the people of the state on the occasion. Muslims constitute four percent of the nearly three million population of Meghalaya.
