DHEMAJI, Nov 1 - Minister for Health, Family Welfare and PWD, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma recently visited the historically famed Habung area and tool stock of the progress of ongoing construction work at Habung which was funded by the state government.
The state government released Rs 3.64 lakh for completion of Chao-Seng-Reng and other renovation works. The state government assured to release an additional amount of Rs 2 crore for development of road links and also to set up a museum.
The state government is planning to develop Habung as a major tourist destination of the state. We will grant funds to conserve the historical pond and maidam at Habung and also establish an ethnic Tai Ahom village showcasing the cultural and traditional ethos of the Tai Ahom community, Minister Sarma said while adding that his government has earmarked Rs 5 crore for development of Habing, the second capital of the once-mighty Ahom kingdom.
We have a plan to develop the historical place in a similar way to Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati and Madhavdev Kshetra at Narayanpur. The overall effort is to protect the legacy of the Ahom kingdom, the Minister added.
It may be recalled that Minister Sarma, who attended the Me-dam-Me-phi celebration at Habung on February 1 last year, announced Rs 25 crore for infrastructure development of the Habung centre.
Under the project, schemes have been taken up to develop it as a major tourist destination.
According to historians, the founder of the Ahom dynasty, Chaulung Siu-Ka-Pha established the capital of the Ahom kingdom at Habung during the 12th century AD. But, because of recurring flood and resultant devastation, he shifted the capital from there to Charaideo across the mighty Brahmaputra.
Habung is located in between Pachim Dhemaji and Dhakuakhana on the bank of Korha and Charikoriya rivers. The Habung Development Management Committee is taking up some construction works covering a plot of 250 bighas.
