GUWAHATI, Sept 7 - The Education department in Assam is among the top three most-corrupt departments in the State. Right from giving recognition to schools, to appointment of teachers and implementing various schemes, there is nothing but corruption, inefficiency and incompetence.

These charges were made by Shantikam Hazarika, former chairman of the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA), while delivering the inaugural TBB Lahkar Memorial Lecture at the Vivekananda Kendra here yesterday evening, stated a press release issued today.

Hazarika expressed alarm at the large number of educated unemployables and the mushrooming of English-medium schools.

Stating that the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) was a sad reflection on those involved with education, the former director of the Assam Institute of Management asserted that the required qualities of motivation and communication skills of teachers cannot be assessed by written examinations.

The meeting was presided over by former judge, Justice DN Choudhury. Gauhati University VC Dr Mridul Hazarika, Guwahati Management Association president Digen Barua and others spoke about the qualities of late Col TBB Lahkar.

A souvenir was also released on the occasion by the chief guest, Jatin Hazarika, a former Advisor to the Chief Minister.
