Driver, guard, passengers of train assaulted by police personnel

HAFLONG, April 15 - Several passengers, drivers, the guard of Guwahati-Silchar fast passenger train were manhandled by unruly personnel of the 1st Assam Police Battalion at Lumding station on the pretext of seats for them resulting in the detention of the train for several hours on Saturday.

It is learnt that hundreds of 1st APBN personnel were to go to Silchar on election duty but there no transportation facility was provided to them. As a result, 500 odd personnel forcibly entered the reserved coaches and AC coach of the train which was already overcrowded.

These policemen then began to assault the passengers of the reserved coaches as they were denied seats. Then they manhandled the driver of the train, Uttam Das who was sent for medical treatment.
