Dilhiyal group of Ahoms to have common surname

DERGAON, Aug 19 - The members of the Dilhiyal group of the Ahom community, scattered all over the State, are going to have a change in their surnames in general.

The decision of such a change in the surnames of the people of the said group to Buragohain was taken at a public meeting organised by the Golaghat district committee of the Dilhiyal group, �Dighala Burahgohain Bongshawali Preparation Committee� at Golaghat recently.

The secretary of the committee Khagen Gogoi in a press release said that the preparation of the bongshawali has been almost completed. Talking to this correspondent, he said that the committee has urged all the people writing their surnames as Gogoi, Gohain, etc., and belonging to the Dilhiyal group to change their titles to Buragohain. The Dilhiyal group, he said, traces its origins to the days of Suikapha and presently most of the people are residing in Golaghat district.

The secretary also revealed that the matter has been refered to the All Assam Buragohain Bongshawali central committee, the Chief Secretary of Assam, Social Welfare Department of Assam, the Union Human Resource Development Ministry and the respective Deputy Commissioners for the legal procedures involved.
