Dibrugarh remembers RG Baruah

DIBRUGARH, Oct 17 � Radha Govinda Baruah�s 114th birth anniversary was celebrated with due pomp in the city here today, under the auspices of the Dibrugarh RG Baruah Smriti Rakhya Samiti.

Floral tributes were paid at the bust of the Singhapurush during a special programme at the Lakshminath Bezbaroa Park on the banks of the Brahmaputra here.

Former DoNER Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar attended the programme as its chief guest. He initiated the ceremony by lighting an earthen lamp at the altar of the bust and by offering prayers. He also performed the traditional aarti before garlanding the bust. Chandrakanta Baruah, former chairman of Dibrugarh Municipal Board also paid his tributes, along with a score of leading citizens here.

Ghatowar in his address recalled the contributions of RG Baruah in the fields like culture, sports, infrastructure and newspaper. He said that every Assamese citizen must be grateful to the great soul - RG Baruah for leaving behind assets for the people in the form of The Assam Tribune group of newspapers, sports complex �Nehru stadium and for promoting games and culture of the State to the national and international level. �It is because of his sincere initiatives in these areas, today Assam is known to the nation and the world. Today the Assamese society is reaping the benefit of his revolutionary thoughts and works. This legacy must be carried forward,� the veteran Congress leader said.

Those attending the programme included senior citizens, businessmen, educationists, artists, former members of the Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB) and staff of The Assam Tribune establishment here. The committee also felicitated Bhudeb Phukan, president, Eastern Assam Chamber of Commerce and Industries; Sunil Borthakur, former principal of MDK Girl�s College; Prakash Bagaria, prominent businessman; Prasenjit Goswami, lawyer and assistant general secretary, Asam Sahitya Sabha; artiste Arati Das; Joy Chandra Gogoi, a practitioner of Sankari culture; Srikanta Bharali, leading newspaper distributor of Upper Assam and freedom fighter Nurul Huda,on the occasion. The programme was anchored by Dr Kamini Ranjan Baruah, president of the Samiti. He was assisted by Samity�s general secretary, Ron Duarah.
