Dibrugarh Press Club members interact with Namphake residents

DIBRUGARH, Nov 16 - The National Press Day was observed today under the aegis of Dibrugarh Press Club at the historic Namphake, a small village of Tai Phake community near Naharkatia town, in Dibrugarh district.

Members of the Press Club toured the village and later interacted with elders of the village as part of the journalists� annual outreach programme on the occasion of National Press Day. The purpose and significance of the day was explained by Manashjyoti Dutta, secretary, Dibrugarh Press Club and Debojit Chutia, assistant secretary, Dibrugarh Press Club respectively.

The Namphake village is one of the cleanest villages in the district and is recognised as a tourist village by the government. The people have their own dress code, live in traditional chang ghars, communicate in their Tai Phake language, practice traditional medicine and also stick to their traditional food. The village comprises some 70 families whose population is around 600. The village elders claim that in the entire state of Assam there are around 1700 Tai Phake people residing in some nine villages.

The media persons toured the village to gather first hand information about the unique and distinct culture of the people.

In the interactive session held inside the Buddhist monastery of the village, the elders of the village led by village head Aiseng Mung Weingken explained to the newsmen about various problems of the village like lack of proper roads, adequate infrastructure for accommodation of tourists, erosion by the river Buri Dehing etc.

The interactive session was moderated by Prabir Chakraborty, president, Dibrugarh Press Club.
