JORHAT, Sept 22 - United under the banner of the Mod-Mukta Asom Dabi Samity (MMADS), representatives of several social organisations of the State today staged a sit-in demonstration in front of Jorhat Deputy Commissioners office demanding enactment of a law for total prohibition of liquor in the State in line with Bihar.

Representatives of several organisations, namely All Tai Ahom Students Union, Ujani Asom Muslim Kalyan Parishad, Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti, Nirjatita Mahila Ekya Mancha, Gana Adhikar Sangram Samity and Anuhusita Jati Chatra Sanstha submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Jorhat DC in this regard.

Expressing serious concern over the spiralling crimes and road-mishaps across the State after consuming liquor, MMADS president Pulak Ranjan Gogoi said that the governments pro-liquor policy devastated thousands of families in the past 25 years.

A host of agricultural activities could be taken up by those involved in liquor trade and the government can also find out alternative sources to earn revenue, he said.
