Death toll rises to 6 in Meghalaya landslides

SHILLONG, June 18 - The death toll in yesterday�s landslide in two districts of the State has climbed to six with three more bodies being recovered from under the debris.�

Relief and rescue team recovered two more bodies at the site of the landslide in Ri-Bhoi district. The body of a child was recovered from East Khasi Hills district.�

Bodies of women were recovered today at Umiam, Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation area today. �The relief and rescue team were able to find the two missing women from the site today,� Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner CP Gotmare said.

The victims were from two families and were residing at makeshift camps at the site when the landslide hit�on Saturday�morning while they were asleep.

A magisterial inquiry has been instituted by the Ri-Bhoi district to probe into the construction of dwelling units for the labourers on a steep hill, Gotmare said.

In another incident the body of a child was recovered at Mawjrong in East Khasi Hills district.� Altogether nine persons were injured in the landslides and are recovering in different hospitals.

A road at Byrnihat was also damaged today due to the rain. Incessant rain over the past 48 hours has caused the landslides.
