Death sentence to one, life term to 11 in Majuli murder case

JORHAT, March 13 - The Court of Additional Sessions Judge (Jorhat) today awarded death sentence to one person and life imprisonment to 11 others after convicting them of murdering three persons of a family in Majuli Island on suspicion of practicing witchcraft on August 28, 2012.

The Additional Sessions Judge Poly Kataki had on Thursday convicted all the 12 accused persons of murdering Rajkumar Doley, Bornali Doley and their son Jitu Doley of Luhit Sapori village under Garamur Police Station, and today announced the quantum of punishment to the convicted persons.

Sentencing Rajen Doley to death under Section 302 of the IPC (murder), Kataki ordered that Rajen Doley �be hanged by the neck till he is dead�. She also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Rajen Doley.

Those sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 302 of the IPC are: Anil Doley, Limai alias Nimai Doley, Atul Doley, Biswa Patir, Baku Doley, Biman Patir alias Birinchi, Bamun Doley, Raju Doley, Lakhindra Patir, Jan Doley and Janma Doley.

Kataki also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on all the 11 convicts.

It may be mentioned that there was another accused person in the case, Pulin Doley, who expired during the trial.

The case dates back to August 29, 2012 when Santanu Doley lodged an FIR at the police station that his parents and brother were missing since the night of August 28, 2012. During investigation police found that the three missing persons were abducted and murdered with sharp weapons. The bodies, chopped into pieces and thrown into Luhit River, were not recovered.

Rajen Doley was identified as the mastermind behind the murders.
