Death anniversary tribute to Sudhakantha

GUWAHATI/JORABAT, Nov 5 - Tributes were paid to Dr Bhupen Hazarika throughout the State on the occasion of his 9th death anniversary today. To mark the occasion, the Dimoria unit of All Assam Students� Union (AASU) organised a programme at Sonapur and garlanded the statue of the Sudhakanta. Members of the student body along with the general public also lighted 100 earthen lamps and remembered the maestro.

Ashok Kumar Das, a sand artist from Dimoria created a sand sculpture of the legend to pay tribute on his 9th death anniversary. �Bhupenda is still one of the most beloved and respected artistes in the State. This piece of art is just a small tribute to him from my side,� said Das. Dipu Zena Sarma, adviser to AASU�s Dimoria unit, said, �Dr Hazarika may not be present among us today physically, but by virtue of his songs, his works of struggle for the Assamese language and the Assamese community, he will always be present in our heart and soul.�

The Madhya Guwahati Dr Bhupen Hazarika Smriti Raksha Samiti observed Smriti Divas on the occasion of the 9th death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika at Sankar Krishti Bikash Samiti Auditorium, Paltan Bazar here.

Guwahati Development Department Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya who attended the function as chief guest, highlighted Dr Hazarika�s immeasurable contribution in the cultural field of the State.

Manisha Hazarika presented Bhupendra Sangeet. Students and teachers of Bengali Higher Secondary School, Pragjyotish English School and Nilachal Vidyalaya presented various cultural items. Teachers and students of Bengali High School were also present at the programme.

President of the committee Ahmed Hussain presided over the meeting and working president Debashish Sengupta gave the inaugural speech. General secretary Sankar Chakraborty gave the welcome speech. Another general secretary Rajib Das offered the vote of thanks.
