Curfew relaxed at Diphu, Bokajan

DIPHU, Aug 3 � The situation in the trouble-torn Karbi Anglong district has not calmed down as yet. Violence and arson over the demand of a separate State are still continuing. Reports of vandalism of more government properties by the Statehood activists came in on the fourth day today.

Violence has spread in the three subdivisions over the entire 10,434 square-km area of the district since the last four days. Normal life has been severely hit with a food crisis looming large on every part of the district. Amid such a scene, the district administration today relaxed curfew for three hours from 8 am to 11 am at Diphu and Bokajan.

On the other hand, to restore normalcy, indefinite curfew was clamped at Dongkamukam under Hamren subdivision in west Karbi Anglong by the district administration today. As per reports received from the administration, five additional security forces have been deployed in various disturbed areas of the district. In spite of this, reports of violence are pouring in from the three subdivisions.

According to the latest information, miscreants set ablaze the Block Development Office at Samelangso and one PHE subdivisional office at Dokmoka in the wee hours today. All official documents including computer sets and air-conditioners at the Samelangso BDO�s Office are reported to have been completely gutted. A storehouse and the regional Congress office were also set afire by miscreants at Ok-Kereng under Howraghat Police Station.

Besides, an Irrigation office at Diphu and a buffalo breeding centre at Manja were set on fire by another mob. There was also an attempt to remove the railway tracks near the Doldoli Railway Station.

According to other reports, the office of the Hills State Democratic Party (HSDP) at Dongkamukam was burnt down by miscreants last night. Besides, an office of the Veterinary & Animal Husbandry at Ulukunsi and an NEC godown were set afire. An inspection bungalow of the Forest Department at Kuliagaon under Hamren subdivision was also torched.

It may be mentioned here that during the last three days, no State Government teams arrived in Karbi Anglong to take stock of the security situation. Though two ministers � Rajib Lochan Pegu and Prithibi Majhi � and Bidyasing Engleng, Diphu MLA and Parliamentary Secretary, arrived here today, they could give no concrete assurance on security measures.
