CRPF celebrates 80th raising day

SHILLONG, July 27 - The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) today celebrated its 80th raising day at the North Eastern Sector Headquarters here with the pledge to avoid plastics and make the environment plastic-free.

Several programmes were held in the CRPF units all over the region on the occasion. Special activities were undertaken including Swachhata Abhiyan, sports events, cultural programmes and others.

Prakash D, Inspector General of the sector, said the men of the NE sector and 67 Battalion have taken a pledge to avoid plastics. The North Eastern Sector is responsible for the security details of Meghalaya and Assam.

Congratulating the men in the force on the hard work they have put in, Prakash D reminded them of the glorious achievements and sacrifices made by CRPF officers and men during the past 80 years.

Due to the good work, dedication and exceptional efforts of the men in the force, insurgency activities have declined and the law-and-order situation in the two States is under control, he added.

The CRPF is one of the oldest paramilitary forces in the country. It was first raised as the Crown Representative Police in 1939 to help States maintain law and order. After Independence, the force was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force by an Act of Parliament on December 28, 1949. This Act constituted the CRPF as an armed force of the Union.

The North Eastern Sector of the CRPF is one of the oldest sectors of the Force. At present, nine battalions are deployed in 14 districts of lower and central Assam and two battalions are deployed in Meghalaya to counter insurgency in the State.
