GUWAHATI, March 15 - The Communist Party of India (CPI) will contest from two constituencies in Assam in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The party has decided to nominate its national council member Kanak Gogoi as candidate for the Jorhat constituency, while its state executive member Arup Kalita will contest from the Lakhimpur seat.
�Though we had initially focused on four constituencies, we have now decided to put up our own candidates in only these two seats. The present political scenario demands that we do whatever is possible to prevent fragmentation and division of anti-BJP votes. As such, we have decided to focus all our strength on the two constituencies of Jorhat and Lakhimpur,� said Munin Mahanta, CPI Assam state unit secretary.
He added, �In the remaining constituencies we have decided to support other Left, democratic and secular forces.�
Meanwhile, sources said that negotiations among various Left parties to reach a seat-sharing arrangement in Assam seem to have failed.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) had yesterday announced that it will contest from the Lakhimpur seat. With CPI also announcing its intention to put up a candidate in the constituency, both the Left parties will be in the fray in Lakhimpur.
