Meanwhile, the State health department today unveiled a dedicated COVID-19 hospital, which, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, would strengthen the States resolve to fight the virus effectively.

The four-storey hospital an annexe of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital was built at a cost of Rs 150 crore funded by the Centre.

The 236-bedded hospital has 186 wards and 50 ICUs and is equipped with separate lab and operation theatres.

The original plan was to open six super-specialty departments in the new unit. But following the outbreak of COVID-19, we decided to convert it into a Covid-19 treatment facility for now. Post COVID, we will go back to our original plan, Sarma said inaugurating the facility.

The new unit at GMCH is centrally air-conditioned and equipped with 14 Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UGVI) System procured from Canada.

The UGVI system will help in improving indoor air quality and bacteria management.
