Consultation on Draft Witch Hunting Bill

GUWAHATI, June 16 � In order to arrest the growing social evil of witch hunting prevalent in the contemporary Assamese society, the Assam government has proposed to enact a new law billed �Prevention and Protection from Witch Hunting Bill 2015�. Based on the proposed Act, a consultation seminar on Draft Witch Hunting Bill was held at the NEDFi House here today.

Organised by the Assam Mahila Samata Samiti, the main agenda of the seminar was to seek suggestions from the civil society groups, academia and individuals who are active in the field of social evils, particularly witch hunting, to make the legislation effective and meaningful. Speaking on the occasion, LS Changson, Commissioner and Secretary, Home and Political said, �Of all social evils, witch hunting turns out to be the most critical challenge today and mere penal provisions are not enough.�

Also present on the occasion were Mukesh Sahay, ADGP, CID, Kula Saikia, ADGP, BIEO, SS Meenakshi Sundaram, Secy to CM, Mukti Gogoi, Secy, Home, SM Bujarbarooah, Secy Legislative and Kalyani Das, Chairperson, Assam State Commission for Women, official sources said.
