City colleges sweep top ranks in Commerce

GUWAHATI, May 30 � Two Guwahati-based institutions swept the top ranks in the Commerce stream in the Higher Secondary final examinations, the results of which were declared today. At KC Das Commerce College, seven students were among the top ten, whereas the Gauhati Commerce College produced four rank holders.

Incidentally, the first position in the Commerce stream was shared by Sweta Agarwal of KC Das Commerce College and Manas Pratim Goswami of Gauhati Commerce College. This year, a total of 18 students were in the top 10 list. Other institutions in the list are Nalbari Commerce College, Darrang College, Ramanuj Gupta Jr College and Salt Brook Academy. These apart, three institutional private candidates also got the ranks.

Apart from the first position, Ankit Kedia (2nd), Ankit Patowary (3rd), Shreya Agarwal (6th), Abhishek Das (7th), Bandana Jain (9th) and Ishika Agarwala (10th) were the toppers from KC Das Commerce College. The 2nd and 7th rank holders of this college also got the State�s highest marks (99) in the subject of Business Studies, whereas another student got the State�s highest marks (95) in Bengali. The college produced 185 first divisions.

The Gauhati Commerce College, which had an excellent past record of HS results, trailed behind last year with only three rank holders in comparison to nine rank holders in 2013. However, this year, with slight improvement in the ranks, the college got 96.69 pc result, which was 99.53 pc in the last year. Other than the topper, Piyush Jain (6th), Nilotpal Sarmah (8th) and Bini Chandgothia (10th) got positions.

�With a slight downfall last year due to various reasons, meeting expectations was a challenge for us. In the given circumstances, I am satisfied with the results and congratulate the teachers and students for their dedicated efforts. Now, we have to achieve the lost glory of our college,� said Dr Homeswar Kalita, principal of the college, who joined in September last year after an internal feud in the college.

The then principal of Gauhati Commerce College, Dr Ghanashyam Nath is now the principal of KC Das Commerce College, which was earlier headed by Dr Homeswar Kalita.

Basking in the glory, Manas Pratim Goswami said that he had expected to bag the top position. �After the tenth position in the HSLC, I always wanted to maintain that pace, where I am counted among the achievers. With the help of my parents, college teachers and home tutor, I achieved this position,� said Manas, who hails from Shrihati of Sualkuchi.

An elated Sweta Agarwal dedicated her success to her parents and college teachers. �I got the perfect environment to study and grow. The support in the form of special classes and motivation from teachers made all the difference,� she added.

Nilotpal Sarmah, who considers Bill Gates as his idol, said small aims in life were necessary to reach top positions, whereas Bini Chandgothia said that regular studies, more than anything else, helped in achieving the goals. Piyush Jain said that regular study leads to success.

Ankit Kedia dedicated his success to his college and its study room where he spent most of his time. Ankit Patowary said that he preferred excellence to rank or position.

Dr Ghanashyam Nath also congratulated the students and the faculty members for the achievement. �With the limited teaching and non-teaching staff, the college has been able to meet the expectations. The dedication of teachers and students is the main factor behind this,� said Dr Nath.

On the other hand, in Cotton College, Tandralee Chetia achieved the 6th position and Syed Bubul Ahmed got the seventh position in the Science stream. In the Arts stream, Himanjali Kalita and Himashree Borah of the college got the 5th and 6th position respectively.
