GUWAHATI, Nov 13 - Keeping in mind various requirements of children at child-friendly police stations, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, an NGO founded by Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi has fully furnished the child-friendly corner of the Azara Police Station as per the guidelines set by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

State Director General of Police Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta who visited the Azara Police Station today and lighted a lamp in the child-friendly corner there, said that all newly constructed police stations across the State would have well furnished child-friendly corners, with enough toys, books and recreation material and also art done by children themselves. The women and child-friendly corner at the newly constructed Azara Police Station under Assam Polices Moitree project, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in 2019.

Child-friendly police stations play a crucial role in encouraging reporting of crime and reinforcing access to justice to all children in need of care and protection and children in conflict with law as per Section 8 (2) (v) of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Model Rules 2016.

A friendly environment will create a special bond between children who need to visit the police station either as children in need of care and protection, or children in conflict with law, with the police personnel making them more sensitive to the issues of children, Mahanta added.

He appreciated the initiative taken by Bachpan Bachao Andolan to furnish the Azara and Rangia police stations and suggested more such collaborations. Assam Police has come up with programmes and projects for a child-friendly State, he said and called upon NGOs to associate themselves with such programmes in a productive manner.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Nabaneet Mahanta; Suprativ Barua, ACP (West) and Nandini Kakati, ACP (West) along with the OC and personnel of Azara PS. BBA was represented by Dr Rashmi Sarmah, State coordinator and Babita Saikia, legal consultant.

Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) is a pioneering grassroots movement against trafficking, forced labour, sexual abuse and other forms of exploitation of children in India.
