MANGALDAI, June 19 Acting on a tip-off, the Mangaldai police on Monday night at about 8 pm seized 31 bullocks which were being taken to Barpeta district without any valid permit. The police also arrested two traders and four drivers and also seized four DI goods carrier vans. Meanwhile, it has registered a case (Mangaldai Police Station Case No. 530/15 under section 379/411 IPC read with section 11 (1) (D) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960).

It has been alleged that the smugglers without any fitness reports from the veterinary officials were carrying these bullocks in a very unhygienic atmosphere, showing a most cruel attitude, by taking as many as eight bullocks in one such van, which is regarded almost double to its bearing capacity for its onward transshipment to Bangladesh through Barpeta district. Significantly, at the time of seizure, the smugglers failed to produce even the receipts issued by the cattle market authority at the time of purchase, the police said.
