Cachar becomes Open Defecation Free district

SILCHAR, Oct 2 - Cachar district has been declared an Open Defecation Free (ODF) district in the State.

Addressing people of the district on at the closing ceremony of the nationwide cleanliness campaign �Swachhata hi Seva�, Deputy Commissioner Dr S Laxmanan said, � as a mark of paying our tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary, we have been able to turn the district free from Open Defecation Free. As many as 1, 36,441 Individual Household Latrine (IHHL) toilets have been constructed across 1015 villages under 15 blocks of the district.� He was quick to add that construction of toilets will not solve the issue, people need to be motivated to use the toilets.

On the other hand, the district administration extended help to the Silchar Municipal Board with a new van for garbage clearance through the State Bank Of India.

Drivers and staff of the conservancy wing of local civic board were felicitated for their contribution and dedication towards keeping the city clean.

Meanwhile, Hironprobha Dev Shishu Mandir has won the cleanest school award while, office of the Superintendent of Police was adjudged the cleanest office in the district, Irongmara ME School is the cleanest school in the rural sector while Sheorarthal village under Dholai constituency was awarded with the cleanest village in the district. A couple of SHGs were also awarded for their activities in keeping the environment clean. NN Tagore, chairman of Silchar Municipal Board presided over the meeting. Former Union Minister Kabindra Purakayastha, Additional SP (Headquarter) Rakesh Reddy, Dr Rajdeep Roy, Dr CR Das, Binoy Bhushan Das, regional general manager SBI, Jaydeep Bhattacharya, faculty and oordinator IQAC of GC College, ADC and CEO DDMA Rajib Roy were amongst other present on the occasion.
