GUWAHATI, Sept 19 - The 13th Annual Brajanath Sharma Memorial Inter-State Drama Festival by theatre group Samahar Natya Gosthee will be held at the District Library auditorium here from September 21 to 26.
The festival is being organised in association with Indian Oil Corporation.
On the occasion, drama festival committee president Lalit Sarma said the festival has become an important and landmark cultural event of the State in the last 12 years. �Now, it is a big responsibility on our shoulder to make it a grand success as in the previous years,� he said.
Since 2007, Samahar has been organising the annual theatre extravaganza in the hallowed memory of Brajanath Sharma � the father of Assamese mobile theatre. He was the pioneer of modern Assamese theatre and had first brought women on the stage to introduce co-acting in the State in 1933.
Sharma, the unique firebrand freedom fighter, had destroyed and set ablaze the British aerodrome at Bornagar, Sarbhog Police Station, post office, etc., in Barpeta district.
The programme for the 13th edition of the festival includes the inauguration ceremony at 6 pm on September 21, followed by the play Kahaya Chandee Dasa to be staged by Saanko from Guwahati, written by eminent playwright Dr Sitanath Lahkar. Directed by Dr Debashis Saikia and Satyajit Gogoi, the play deals with terrorism and surrendered militants.
Earlier, the ceremonial lamp for the inauguration will be lit by Brajanath Sharma�s daughter Nirmala Mishra and granddaughter Neelakshi Mishra Sharma. The festival will be inaugurated by veteran film actor of Maniram Dewan fame and social worker Dilip Hazarika. The souvenir of the festival Kohinoor will be released by eminent journalist Haidor Hussain.
The next few days of the festival will witness the staging of plays Beshya, Dakghar, Kalchakra, Bande Mataram and Chora Ubacha.
