GUWAHATI, Oct 22 - The Assam State BJP today decided to move the State Election Commission with the request to hold the panchayat election in the State at the earliest possible. The decision was taken at a meeting of all BJP MLAs, MPs and officer-bearers of the State committee held at the Chief Ministers residence here.
After the meeting State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said, Around three months ago we had requested the State Election Commission to hold the panchayat election in the interest of decentralisation of power. Earlier, there was a manpower crisis in Assam to hold the election, as around 50,000 State government employees were engaged in the NRC updating process. Now most of those employees are free after publication of the final draft NRC. So we will again move the Commission with the same request.
Dass said that the BJP would emerge at the top in the panchayat election and that the party has already directed all workers to be prepared for the election.
Recently our MLAs and party leaders had carried out a ten-day survey in all districts to gauge the public support. The survey result showed that we will definitely be in the first position in the panchayat poll. No Congress leader will be able to defeat us, Dass added.
Meanwhile, Dass said there has been no discussion as yet with the AGP regarding a tie-up in the panchayat poll. Our MLAs and district presidents will hold local-level talks with the AGP leadership in this regard, he said.
