BJP-SGS alliance sweeps Mac, SKAC polls

GUWAHATI, Jan 28 - The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP ) and its ally the Sanmilita Gana Sakti (SGS) swept the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC) and the Mising Autonomous Council (MAC) polls which were held on January 21 last. Independents captured most of the seats in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council polls.

According to the final updated figures, of the 26 setas in the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council, the BJP got 20, the Congress got five and one seat was bagged by an Independent.

In the Mising Autonomous Council polls, the Sanmilita Gana Sakti got 29 seats, others got one seat while the BJP bagged five. The Council has 36 seats. Election for one seat (10- Akajan) was adjourned.

Our Dhemaji Correspondent reports: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally Sanmilita Gana Sakti (SGS) has swept the Mising Autonomous Council (MAC) and Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC) elections in Dhemaji district by capturing almost all the seats.

The BJP-backed SGS has made a clean sweep in the MAC polls by winning all seats of the MAC in the district, while the saffron party won all the four SKAC seats.

A number of old faces including former Chief Executive Councilor of MAC Paramananda Chayengia (No.17-Mingmang), Vice Chairman Kanak Doley (No.9- Muktiyar) have been re-elected from their respective constituencies, while former members namely Jogyeswar Kutum (No.11-Ujani Sissi), Johan Doley (No.12 Namoni Sissi) Raju Medak (No. 3 Gali-Bijoypur) and Pratap Ch Taye (No.9- Muktiyar) were also re-elected.

Among the new faces, All Mising Students Union (TMPK) president Naresh Kumbang (No. 2 Murkongselek-Jonai), Bobi Kanta Doley (No. Owang-Jonai), and few others have been elected to MAC from different constituencies of the district.

The ruling BJP fielded its party candidates in MAC poll by seat sharing with Sanmilita Gana Sakti (SGS). Thus, the saffron party contested in four MAC seats under Dhemaji subdivision, but left all seven seats for its ally SGS in Jonai. The BJP of course, managed to capture only two seats in MAC, but gained all four seats of SKAC seats in the district.

On the other hand, BJP candidate Bijoy Saikia, who is known as a kin of Lakhimpur Lok Sabha MP Pradan Baruah has captured the lone Jonai (ST) SKAC seat in Jonai subdivision. Saikia defeated his nearest rival Harshajyoti Kochari (Independent) by a margin of 833 votes. Saikia got 2,577 votes and Kochari bagged 1,744 votes whereas the Congress candidate Jan Hazarika managed to get only 969 votes. Other BJP candidates who won in SKAC constituencies are Tankeswar Sonowal (Gogamukh), Nandini Deka (Batghoriya) and Deeprekha Das (Dhemaji) SKAC constituencies.

Dhemaji district administration conducted the Council Election in 15 MAC and four SKAC constituencies. The Election Commission adjourned council poll in No. 10 Akajan MAC constituency, while one Malendra Narzary, a SGS candidate who had filed nomination in No. 6 Sanjari Nigir MAC constituency was declared winner unopposed.

The MAC with its head office at Gogamukh in Dhemaji district has total 36 constituencies, out of which 17 fall in Dhemaji.

There was no election for Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) conducted in Dhenaji district as no constituency of the council has been set up so far.

Our Lakhimpur Correspondent adds: The Sanmilta Gana Shakti (SGS) swept the Mising Autonomous Council polls in Lakhimpur district winning all the five constituencies in Lakhimpur district. Anil Payeng of SGS won the No. 18 Bhimpora Bogeenadi MAC seat securing 5333 votes. In No. 19 Ghunasuti Pub-Telahi contstituency, Biju Pegu of SGS won the poll by receiving 9995 votes while Mukul Pegu won from No. 23 Luhit-Pachim MAC constituency securing 5829 votes. Debaranjan Morang and Dilip Pegu of the SGS won the polls form No. 24 Ranganadi and No. 25 Dikrong constituencies with votes 3334 and 5276 respectively.

The BJP won both the seats of Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council from Lakhimpur. Their candidates Khanindar Sonowal and Prasanta Sonowal won from No. 21 Telahi and No. 22 Bogeenadi constituencies respectively.

The counting of votes in Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district was delayed by the sudden demise of its serving Sub-Divisional Police Officer Cheni Ram Saikia. He breathed his last in the early hours today following a cardiac arrest. He was 54. Hailing from Jorhat, SDPO Saikia had been posted in Dhakuakhana for some time. He was rushed to a private hospital on Sunday evening following complaint of chest pain.

ANN Service adds from Sivasagar: The BJP clinched the 17 No. Rajabari Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council constituency in Charaideo district, while the Sanmilita Gana Sakti got the 34 No. Desang Dikhow Mising Autonomous Council seat in the elections held on January 21 last.

Jadov Deka Baruah of BJP won with a margin of 172 votes defeating his nearest rival Kamal Kachari of the Congress in the 17 No. Rajabari constituency. D eka Baruah got1150 votes, Kamal Kachari got 978 votes and Subhrajit Sonowal(Ind) got 685 votes.

Niva Pegu Mili of Sanmilita Ganasakti won in Desang Dikhow constituency getting 5400 votes. Bristi Panging Mili of the BJP got 4009 votes and Renuka Mili of the INC got 1775 votes.

Our Silapthar Correspondent adds: In Jonai LAC,the winning candidates of Sanmilita Gana Sakti are Johan Doley (Namani Sissi Tangani), Joygeswar Kutum (Ujani Sissi Tangani), Pratap Taye (Muktiyar), Kanak Doley (Silasuti), Noresh Kumbang (Murkongselek), Padum Rai (Debing Detak), Raju Medok (Gali Bijoypur), Bobi Kanta Pegu (Owang Jonai), Bhawani Duwarah (Simen Somkong) and Ratiram Basumatary (Lali). Malendra Narzary (Sanzary Nagar) won uncontested.

The winning candidates from Dhemaji LAC of the SGS are Parmananda Chayengiya (Mingmang), Raju Pegu (Gogamukh) and Bani Kanta Doley (Jiadhal). The two winning BJP candidates are Prabhat Basumatary (Nalbari) and Labayana Mili (Sissimukh).

For the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council polls in Dhemaji district, all the four seats were won by BJP candidates namely Deeprekha Das Baghari (Dhemaji constituency), Nandini Deka (Bathgoria) and Tankeswar Sonowal (Gogamukh) under Dhemaji LAC, while Bijoy Saikia (Jonai) won the seat under Jonai LAC.

Our Staff Correspondent adds from Dibrugarh: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won nine seats out of the 11 seats in the district of the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC). Indian National Congress (INC) and an Independent managed to win one each.

The constituencies of SKAC won by BJP include Khowang, Mancotta, Lepetkatta, Sahorikata, Kutuha, Rongchongi, Tengakhat, Kheremia and Naharkatia. The Kamargaon went to INC while Khatua went to the Independent. Similarly, the Sanmilita Gana Sakti won the lone constituency (Dehing Sessa) of the Mising Autonomous Council in the district.
