Bid to change name of NC Hills district opposed

HAFLONG, March 14 � The newly formed students� forum under the banner of NC Hills Indigenous Students� Forum (NCHISF) representing all indigenous students� community of NC Hills sharply reacted to the Cabinet sub-committee�s decision on change of nomenclature of NC Hills as the decision �transparently marginalizes the rights of other diverse tribes living in NC Hills�, a release said. The Kukis, Hmars, Jeme Nagas, Karbis, Biates, Vaipheis, Hrangkhols, Jaintias and Khelmas etc, have been inhabiting the hills which formed NC Hills time immemmorial. They are supposedly the first settlers in this hilly district, the release issued by Nahumbe Zeme, Information & Publicity secretary NC Hills Indigenous Students� Forum Haflong stated.

The NC Hills Indigenous Students� Forum (NCHISF) with the aim and objectives of �Unification of all indigenous people of NC Hills and to stand upright against any attempt to confiscate their ancestral land� was formed on March 6 with Thangte Hmar as president, Nelson K Zeme as vice president, Seiminthang Thangngew as general secretary, Lalhauthang Haolai as asst secretary, Nahumbe Zeme as secretary, Information & Publication, Macbeth Hmar as Finance secretary.

The NCHISF appealed to the State Government to repeal its Cabinet sub Committee�s decision on name change or division NC Hills district.
