�Bharat Bandh� call against fuel price hike

NEW DELHI, Sept 9 - The opposition Congress, which has called for a �Bharat Bandh� on Monday over rising fuel prices and depreciation of the rupee, has appealed party workers to maintain peace and not to associate with any violent protests.

It said 21 opposition parties are supporting the �Bharat Bandh�, besides a number of chambers of commerce and traders� associations.

The party demanded that petrol and diesel should be brought under GST, by which oil prices could drop by about Rs 15 to Rs 18.

Staff reporter adds: Meanwhile, the Assam Congress leaders today said the party workers have been mobilised to make the bandh call a success in the State.

On the eve of the nationwide strike, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge for Assam and the former chief minister of Uttarakhand Harish Rawat led a symbolic procession of the party leaders and workers at the Fancy Bazar locality here.

Rawat, who was accompanied by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora, called upon the traders to make the bandh call a success.

In the evening, Rawat and Bora led a candlelight procession by the Congress workers from the Manabendra Sarma Complex to the Supermarket and Dispur.

At 9 am tomorrow, another procession by the Congress workers will be brought out in the Ganeshguri area to protest against the high retail prices of petroleum products.

Meanwhile, the Left parties have also geared up for the nationwide hartal called for tomorrow, to coincide with the �Bharat Bandh� called by the Congress.
