Bhairabkunda festival begins

UDALGURI, Jan 17 - The eighth edition of Bhairabkunda Tourism Festival got under way yesterday at Bhairabkunda Tourism Centre with flag hoisting by Prakash Ranjan Gharphaliya, Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district.

In this connection, a cleanliness drive titled �Swaccha Bhairabkunda Abhiyan� was carried out in which a large section people participated. This programme was inaugurated by Ripen Daimari MCLA of Bhairabkunda constituency and chief convener of the festival management committee.

The five-day festival has a wide range of programmes to attract tourists. A cultural programme was also held where local artistes from almost all linguistic groups took part. The first-day programme featured with inter-club volleyball competition, it was inaugurated by Col. Rahul, Commanding Officer of 14 Garhwal Rifles, followed by elephan and Jeep safari, ATV ride, clay bird shooting and para motoring, which was inaugurated by Tridip Daimari, Speaker of BTC Assembly and an exhibition was inaugurated by Charan Boro, MLA of Mazbat LAC. A Bodo traditional wrestling competition was also held on the occasion. A multi-colour cultural nite was inaugurated on the occasion where popular artists Krishna Mizar, Pallavi Rabha,Champak Rabha, Isha Chetry and a playback singer from Haryana Priti Devi enthralled the audience.

The festival has been organised to attract both foreign and domestic tourists for which the BTC administration has taken a slew of initiatives. Last year the festival saw participation of a large section of tourists. �We are expecting more tourists this year considering our arrangements and prepartions. More footfall will help grow tourism business in and roaund the area,� a senior member of the reception committee told this correspondent. He further laid emphasis on improving connectivity in the area in order to woo more tourists.
