Bedlam in Tripura House over rape by police officer

AGARTALA, Nov 1 (PTI) - The Tripura Assembly was today adjourned twice following uproar over reports of rape of a minor girl allegedly by a police officer in Dhalai district.

Raising the matter, leader of opposition Ratan Lal Nath demanded a statement from Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on actions against the officer-in-charge of Kamalpur police station who was arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl at his residence.

As the entire opposition started shouting slogans and rushed to the podium, Speaker Ramendra Chandra Nath adjourned the House for 15 minutes at 11:05 am.

When the House re-assembled, there was fresh bedlam and the House was adjourned till 2:00 pm.

In the statement, made in the House later, the Chief Minister said in deference to the demand of the Opposition, an SP-rank officer would be appointed to investigate the matter.
