Barak fest begins

SENAPATI, Dec 12 - The second edition of Barak festival 2015 was formally inaugurated at Senapati hill district headquarters, about 60 km from here on Friday.

President of Nagaland-based Tenyimi People�s Organisation (TPO) Timikha Koza was the chief guest at the inauguration of the three-day festival.

Speaking on the occasion, Koza appealed to the people to preserve forests for a better future. �We are enjoying the benefit of Barak river as the river is gift for Senapati and other neighjbouring people including in Assam,� said TPO president. �The benefit and beauty of Barak will be gone if we continue to destroy our forests�, he added.

The Barak river which originates from the hills of Liyai village in Manipur�s Senapati district and flows down through Senapati and Tamenglong districts before crossing over into Assam�s Cachar district and then into Bay of Bengal via Bangladesh, provides livelihood to five tribes � Mao, Maram, Poumai, Thangal and Zeliangrong in Senapati district.

The main highlights of the festival include folk dances and songs, indigenous car rally, pole climbing, tug of war, modern carol competition.
