Bangla Govt to honour ex-State police officer

GUWAHATI, March 3 � Retired Indian Police Service officer Hiranya Kumar Bhattacharya will be honoured by the Government of Bangladesh for his role in helping the Bangladesh Mukti Bahini, on the ensuing Independence Day celebration of the country.

Bhattacharya told The Assam Tribune that he received a letter from the Bangladesh Foreign Minister requesting him to visit the country as a state guest from March 23 to 26 to attend the Independence Day and to receive the honour to be bestowed on him.

Bhattacharya said that during the Bangladesh struggle for freedom in 1971, as the AIG in charge of Training, he had trained up 243 Bangladesh Mukti Bahini members in Kahilipara and Mandakata in close quarter battle for around three weeks.

The retired IPS officer said that he was elated to receive the honour for his service in the freedom struggle of Bangladesh.
