IMPHAL, March 22 � Normal life in the Meitei-Pangal areas in Manipur has been affected due to indefinite bandh called by the Muslim bodies in the state in protest against the alleged indifferent attitude of the State government including the state chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh over the killing of Md Likaman. The bandh has also hit normal life in Hatta areas in Imphal east district as the strike supporters blocked the main road in Hatta besides closing the shops and other business establishments on either sides of the Hatta road. The bandh was called following a public meeting chaired by Md Abdul Latif, member Leishangthem Jilla Parishad at Moijing Area in Thoubal district on Saturday, reports said.
According to sources available here, the said victim Md Likaman(27) had gone from his mother�s village Kiyamgei Muslim to Kiyamgei Urup to take part in a religious function on March 16, but failed to return home and disappeared.
A missing report was thereafter filed with the Irilbung Police Station, Imphal East, on March 17, and the disappearance was also notified in the local cable TV channels, the source added. Later, news reached the family of the deceased that he was recovered dead at Heingang Ahallup area, with marks of brutal injury and his body had been deposited at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science hospital mortuary in Imphal east district.
The members of the newly formed Joint Action Committee Against the Brutal Killing of Md Lukaman said they had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking his intervention in tracing the murderers, but as no action was forthcoming, they were compelled to call the protest general strike. The JAC also appealed to all right thinking civil organisations to support the movement so that justice is done in the murder case.
Meanwhile, personnel of the Imphal East district police including women unarmed and armed police personnel, have been monitoring the situation at Hatta area since morning. There was no report of any untoward incident till the filing of this report.
