GUWAHATI, OCT 23: A 12-hour bandh called by 46 organisations led by the AJYCP and the KMSS to demand withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 brought Assam to a standstill today.
Despite several measures taken by the State government to thwart it, the bandh call evoked complete response across the State.
Reports of burning of tyres were pouring in from many places but no major untoward incidents were reported till noon.
Stone pelting on vehicles were reported during the early hours at Dibrugarh and Chabua. Picketers were seen in large numbers at Golaghat.
In Guwahati, the state secretariat registered nearly 80 per cent attendance but attendance in other government offices in the city was negligible.
There was no public transport on the roads in the city, apart from a few ASTC buses. A few picketers were detained in Panbazar and Beltola areas here.
Meanwhile, the AGP also took out a procession from the Latasil playground to the Chandmari area to register its protest against the Bill. Some 5,000 people took part in the procession.
