Autonomous council for Garos

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

TURA, Sept 6 - The All Achik Youth Federation (AAYF), Assam Zone, today reiterated its demand for a separate council for the Garos in Assam.

Why is the BJP-led Government in Assam denying a separate Garo Autonomous Council in the State? Why cannot the Assam Government create a separate Council for us? asked AAYF, Assam Zone, president Crossbell Marak.

He pointed out that the Mising, Tiwa and Sonowal tribes have got separate Councils while the Garos are still being denied.

Many of our forefathers sacrificed their lives for freedom from the British rule and we question as to why the Assam Government has diluted the contributions of the Garo people, asserted Marak in a press release today.

The AAYF unit added that it is the overriding consideration to preserve the culture, language and tradition of the Garos which has led to the demand for a separate Council in Assam.
