GUWAHATI, July 19 - The All Tai Ahom Students� Union (ATASU) has announced a series of agitational steps, which includes gherao of the Delhi residences of the Assam MPs, in support of its demands, with effect from July 27, said a press release signed by its president Pranjal Rajkonwar here on Sunday.
It has demanded according of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Tai Ahoms and other five ethnic groups of the State within the current year, proper steps to scientifically preserve the Ahom era historical monuments, steps to make history and geography compulsory in the schools of the State, not to resume or start afresh construction of any mega hydel project dam unless the report of the expert committee, which is studying the subject, is accepted, cancellation of the list of nominees prepared by the State�s Governor for the Dibrugarh University Court and preparation of the list afresh by engaging learned people of the State and a public apology from the Central government on the issue of �injustices� meted out to noted filmmaker Jahnu Barua and senior Oil Indian Limited (OIL) officer Rupshikha Saikia Borah in matters of their appointment as chairman of the Indian Film and Television Institute and Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of OIL respectively.
The members of the ATASU will wear black badges on July 28, stage a sit-in demonstration at Dispur Last Gate on August 10 and hold a three-day workers� meet in Lakhimpur on August 21, 22 and 23 next. They will also stage a sit-in demonstration at Jantar-Mantar, New Delhi in October next. ATASU members will also gherao the residences of the MPs from Assam simultaneously for their silence on the above issues, said the press release.
