Assamese film on LGBTQIA making waves

GUWAHATI, Sept 9 - At a time when the Assamese film industry is going through a very difficult phase in view of the ongoing pandemic, a film Fireflies-Jonaki Porua has been receiving overwhelming applause on the digital platform. The film has now become a ray of hope for the entire industry to regain its momentum.

Directed by young director Prakash Deka, Fireflies-Jonaki Porua could be the first Assamese full-length feature film which directly deals with the LGBTQIA theme.

This debut film of the director portrays the story of one Jahnu. Notably, in her recent film Bulbul Can Sing, internationally acclaimed Assamese filmmaker Rima Das also tried to tell the story of LGBTQIA to some extent.

Fireflies-Jonaki Porua is now streaming on the over-the-top platform Moviesaints.com and has been garnering overwhelmingly positive response from audiences as well as critics. Apart from this, the film has also received international recognition at more than 20 prestigious film festivals of the world. It is produced by Milin Dutta.

The film crew has Tarali Sarma as music director, Debajit Gayan as sound designer, Chow Partha Borgohain as cinematographer and Ratan Sil Sarma as editor.

Significantly, only because of its unique and powerful storyline around a sensitive issue, the film has ignited a lot of discussion across all quarters of the general public, film critics as well as academic scholars.

Moreover, Fireflies-Jonaki Porua is the only Indian film nominated to the competition category of South Asia�s biggest Queer Film Festival called Kashish MIQFF, 2020, which is also one of the top five queer film festivals in the world. In Kashish MIQFF 2020, it fetched the best actor award for Benjamin Daimary, who is the lead protagonist in the film.
