GUWAHATI, Oct 17 � The Assam Sports Day, which is organised on the occasion of RG Baruah�s birth anniversary, was celebrated here in the city today with a day-long programme under the aegis of State Directorate of Sports and Board of Sports of Assam.
In the morning floral tributes were paid at the bust of RG in the RG Baruah Sports Complex. A meeting was held to recall RG where State Sports Minister Ajit Singh was present as chief guest. TG Baruah, Chairman of the Assam Tribune Group of Newspapers, noted sportspersons and organisers Pulin Das, Dr Sarat Dutta, Premadhar Sharma, Debasish Ray, Tayabun Nesa, Director of Sports Sanjib Gohain Baruah, Joint Director Anjan Sarma, Deputy Director Pradip Hazarika, Bhupen Choudhury along with a host of sportspersons and organisers were also present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion the Sports Minister recalled RG�s contribution to the State in the field of sports, culture, newspaper industry etc. Singh said he will take necessary step to organise the Assam Sports Day in every district from next year onwards. He also promised to develop the sports infrastructure in all over the State so that Assam can produce more quality sportspersons.
TG Baruah urged youngsters to take sports seriously so that Assam can produce good players in every disciplines. He also appealed the sports loving people to support sportspersons so that they can perform well.
Pulin Das recalled his association with RG and elaborated how RG set up the Nehru Stadium over coming a critical situation. Premadhar Sharma explained about RG�s determination in constructing sports infrastructure in Assam.
The organisers also conducted table tennis and badminton tournaments for boys and girls U-10 and U-14 years to mark the occasion.
