GUWAHATI, Jan 7 - The All Assam Students Union (AASU) along with 30 organisations of Assam, and the North East Students Organisation (NESO) today urged all the people of Assam and the northeastern region to make the 11-hour bandh from 5 am to 4 pm tomorrow successful.

The AASU and 30 organisations gave the call for Assam bandh in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. The NESO also called an 11-hour Northeast bandh on the same day in protest against the citizenship Bill.

The AASU and the 30 organisations today observed Black Day in the State with activists burning copies of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. According to a statement of the AASU, copies of the Bill were burnt in 70 locations in Guwahati alone.

The student body said the BJP government has betrayed the people of Assam, but the people are not weak, and we will stop any attempt to impose the Bill.

AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said the ruling BJP has insulted the people of Assam and they will never tolerate it. We will challenge the Bill by any means. The BJP action on the citizenship Bill has exposed the partys anti-Assamese stand, he added.

Meanwhile, the protesting organisations today announced exemption to health service, water service, milk service, fire service, all examinations, convention of the All Bodo Students Union, convention of the Golaghat District Students Union, Kartik Hazarika National Drama Festival, North-East Gorkha Cultural Festival, Deepshikha Foundations programme, and the urban body election of Karbi Anglong district along with all emergency services from the purview of the bandh.
